Here’s something completely untech for a weekend posting.
Via Metafilter: YourDictionary.com’s 100 Most Often Mispronounced Words and Phrases in English. Some of my favourites (some of which should be phrases in their own right, though perhaps not for what they’re being used to describe):
- For all intensive purposes instead of For all intents and purposes
- Heineken remover for Heimlich maneuver
- Carpool tunnel syndrome rather than Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Old-timer’s disease not Alzheimer’s disease
And a few I get wrong myself:
- duck tape instead of duct tape
- lambast should be lambaste
- pottable should be potable (and pronounced to rhyme with ‘floatable’)
- pronounciation should be pronunciation
